Once Upon a Design

Mushrooms shift and change, growing wider and taller as you trek further into the mushroom forest, becoming towering behemoths—or is it you that has changed? Rings of smoke twist and turn around the mushroom stems, drawing you ever closer to the answer. Behold the odd sights of the forest, playground for many peculiar insects and the elusive glass frog. Duck around stems as big as tree trunks, and find yourself on the other side of the mushroom where the view once again changes. Whichever side of the mushroom you are on, admire the world that emerges from a tiny change in your perspective

Notable design details:

  • Interior bottle opening: 10mm wide to fit a variety of writing instruments
  • Enter the Mushroom forest and explore under the shade of Amanita caps, toadstools and Chanterelle mushrooms
  • Many creatures call this forest home; Hex-butterflies and inky frogs lounge atop the mushroom caps while tiny worms, ladybugs and ants play in the shade
  • Smoke from a distant hookah snakes around mushroom stems the size of tree trunks and whispers secret messages to all those who care to listen
  • Twisting vines blanket the forest floor, sprouting and climbing taller and taller! The fruits they bear look a little unusual, no?
  • Hidden amongst the mushrooms is a mysterious stash of potion bottles. Dare you take a drink?

I bought 2 Carousel fountain pens in December and two pots of ink.

It's very cool that the fountain pens come with converters with little shaker balls inside so you can mix the shimmer up after the pen has been resting for some time. Unfortunately, the ink pots do not and I find that I have to shake/roll them a lot to get the shimmer sufficiently mixed into the ink. I also notice that the shimmer does not stay suspended in the ink for very long at all. I have other shimmer inks (Diamine) that stay well mixed for quite a long time. The second you put the ink pot down, the shimmer is already gathering at the bottom.

The green fountain pen has had flow issues from the moment I took it out of the box. I was most excited about this one (love the colour!!) and when I got it inked up and tried it for the first time... It always starts writing like I left ink in it and let it sit for months... once it starts flowing enough to actually write with it, it's patchy and the lines aren't solid. I attached examples of how the pink pen I bought writes, compared to how the green pen writes.

Worse, though, is that I just took out the pink pen to switch it up after using my Lamy for a while and when I tried to remove the cap so I could unscrew the shaft and fill it with ink, the shaft popped off!! I had to remove the grip/tip of the pen from the cap with pliers. Upon closer inspection and as seen in the attached photo, the shaft is cracked and therefore the threads cannot grip enough to hold onto the top half of the pen when removing the cap. This pen has BARELY been used and has been treated with such care... there is no reason why it should have cracked.

Very disappointed in the quality of these pens. I know they're 15$ pens, but I expected more. Certainly didn't expect them to each be nigh unusable - one basically immediately and the other after only a handful of uses. Do not recommend. Spend the extra 25$ and get a Lamy that will last you a lifetime.

Beautiful, as FWP inks always are.

I love the swatch for this colour! Unfortunately I don’t think I’m very good at working with shimmer inks yet as the shimmer tends to gather at the bottom of the bottle. I shake it before I fill the cartridge but the end result is still less shimmery than I had hoped. It’s still a lovely purple though but not quite the same as it’s presented here.

beautiful but light

I really love this ink, it's a beautiful muted/greyish mauve with warm pink undertones, and it is so beautiful with the shimmer. However, it is very light and not always legible due to the shading, and I would recommend using it with a broad nib or dip pen.
